More Information on the Rocky Mountain Horse

We cannot stress enough how important it is that you do your "research" before you purchase a Rocky Mountain Horse. If it sounds like too good of a deal.... Well - you know how that old saying ends... There are people who are marketing "so-called" Rockies here in New England that are taking advantage of the lack of knowledge we have up here in regards to this breed. I have heard stories from people who have bought horses from farms that come with incomplete or no paperwork. They are unable to either register or certify these horses!!

First off - NEVER buy a Rocky Mountain Horse that is not already registered. There is so much paperwork that goes into registering these horses that only the breeder can file. Such as breeding slips that need to be turned into the RMHA before the foal is born. Then all horses must be DNA tested to prove the parentage. A vet needs to inspect the horse and then an application is sent to the RMHA.

Secondly - If the horse is over the age of 2 years and already started under saddle do not buy a RMH unless they are already "Certified". This is a final inspection that tests the temperment, conformation, color markings and gait of each horse. Any horse that does not meet ALL of these standards is not certified, regardless of their breeding.

This may sound daunting... but remember all these steps were made to protect the attributes of the Rocky Mountain Horse as it's meant to be.... And any good breeder takes pride in the heritage of this breed and would never consider selling their horses without all the proper paperwork in place and filed for the new owner.

The best resource I can give you in regards to proper paperwork for a Rocky is the Rocky Mountain Horse Association. www.rmhorse.com

Another suggestion - Anyone considering the purchase of a Rocky should purchase and read Bonnie Hodges book, Rocky Mountain Horses. She gives as much information on the history and versatility of this breed as you will be able to find anywhere. You can by it online at her website. www.wildfireenterprises.iceryder.net or by calling (870)458-3600 or click on the cover page below for a hyperlink.

Take your time....The upfront time and effort that you put into the research of your horse will pay out in the end. This is a remarkable breed of horse and I have never met an owner of a quality one who wasn't thrilled.

If you have any questions please don't hestitate to get in touch with us. Even if you just want to see some Rockies. We are always willing to share the knowledge.
